Religious Issues

Religion sometimes comes as a contributing factor in choosing the birth control methods out there. These issues can vary from one religion to another. These limitations often come as part of religious practices to engage in the ethical issues and practices of sex. Religion plays a dominating factor especially for the conservative and traditional people who are governed by such practices. Here are examples of accepted birth control options of the given religion:

Religion Accepted Birth Control Practice
Roman Catholic Natural family planning, Pro-creation
Protestant Christianity Natural family planning,
Judaism Birth control accepted only on special conditions like limiting the number of children in the family
Islam Sterility, Coitus interruptus, Pro-creation
Hinduism Pro-creation, Pro-contraception
Buddhism Birth control pills, Condoms

Natural family planning

Natural family planning

Christianity-based religions advocate the natural family planning and even support pro-creation. Contraception is often discouraged since it suggests promiscuity and polygamous relationships.

Judaism does believe in pro-creation, but contraceptive use can be done if a particular family needs to control the number of children in the family.

Islam hints on pro-creation in their Koran. Acceptable forms of birth control include coitus interruptus and sterility for either males or females.

Because India is the originator of Hinduism, contraception is greatly supported. As a country, it is experiencing uncontrollable population growth. Hence, the use of contraception has aided in this population problem in the country, and in religion, very supported.

Meanwhile, Buddhists do not renounce the use of contraception. In fact, the Buddhists prefer condoms over anything else. For as long as the contraception is “wholesome”, it is an acceptable form for birth control.
