For many decades, the male condom has been used for birth control. Before the 19th century, historians have gathered sources of its existence and use among male with a primary goal of protecting against the spread of syphilis. However, with use, it has been used to control pregnancy in women.

Earlier forms of condom ranged from cover-ups on the glands penis to the covering of the whole penile shaft. Earlier makes were animal horns and shells to cover the tip of the penis to stretchable material made of animal intestine and bladder. Despite of its controversy as an immoral tool, it continued to evolve as the material became more sensitive. Lamb skin eventually turned to latex and polyurethane. And with its use, spermicidal is applied to kill off sperm.

The male condom is made up of an elastic material either latex or polyurethane, and is an inexpensive option for the prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. However with typical use, it can contribute to unwanted pregnancy. But definitely, this type of barrier method prevents the transmission of STDs. Male condoms can be easily purchased in drugstores and is considered the most commonly used contraception because of its cheap cost. Additionally, condoms are available in different variants: flavors, texture and colors. The sexual activity can be heightened brought by these features.

Some people are allergic to the latex variants, and so, they can use the latex-free varieties. Also, the type of rubber used for male condoms break when used with oil-based lubricants. These oil-based lubricants weaken the condom material and increase the chances of STD transfer or pregnancy rate. Only water-based jellies or lotions are used to prevent condom breakage. Lubrication is thus necessary to keep it in place. If the area is too dry, slipping can occur during sex play.

Care must be taken when storing condoms. Avoid keeping it in tight quarters of wallets or exposing to heat since it will increase the breakage incidents. Check when the condom expires just to play safe and to know that you are getting a fresh batch.

Lastly, never reuse condoms! It is not only unhygienic but also it risks both partners to STDs and pregnancy.
