Effectiveness

By far, abstinence is the best and most effective means of birth control and in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. However, for couples not opting for a sex-less relationship, there are other forms of contraception that can be as effective.

In choosing the best contraceptive method, you must consider your preferences primarily. Additionally, you must know your goals first before you choose an option. Situations and goals are discussed below.

  • Being Childless

If your priority is to remain childless, there are many options for you. In fact, contraception were made to answer for this need. In the market, you can choose barrier or physical methods of contraception. These barrier methods are usually acquired without prescription and are often inexpensive. The most inexpensive and most commonly used is the male condom. There are many brands with different sizes, types, colors and flavors to choose from. However, the effectiveness of barrier methods generally depend on these are used and applied. Effectiveness in preventing unplanned pregnancies and even the spread of STDs depend on the condition of these instruments. Condoms, whether male or female, must not break or leak. Cervical caps and diaphragms must be properly placed over the cervical opening so that sperm cannot enter into the uterus. And, spermicides must not be washed after intercourse to retain its effectiveness.

Hormonal methods give almost 99% rate of birth control effectiveness. The contraceptive pill, contraceptive patch, Norplant and Depo-provera injectables can offer a higher effectiveness rate over the barrier methods. This is so because it targets on the internal processes of the female’s reproductive systems. Ovulation is delayed or stopped, and so, does not provide chances of fertility. However, effectiveness will depend on the daily pill intake or weekly changing of the patch. For Norplant and Depo-Provera, visits to the doctor are necessary to ensure its effectiveness too.

Behavioral methods include coitus interruptus and outercourse. Withdrawal method can accidentally make women pregnant, and outercourse may lead to the same fate if self-control weakens.

  • Preventing STDs

As mentioned, barrier methods particularly the condoms are the better alternatives to abstinence. Other forms, whether behavioral or hormonal means, do not protect the partners from the spread of disease. Many global organizations focused on sex education and safe sex advocacies have stressed the importance of using condoms when engaging casual and polygamous sex.

Unfortunately, effectiveness of condoms depends on the user’s vigilance in keeping it on during intercourse and to assure that there are no leaks and breaks on the rubber. Store condoms in cool, dry places to minimize breakages.
